Minoxidil is a well-known topical treatment that’s effective for hair loss.
Minoxidil, also known as Rogaine, is sold in 2% and 5% concentrations.
Minoxidil foam or liquid is applied to the scalp twice per day.
10% minoxidil concentrations also exist.
Currently, there are no studies comparing the effectiveness of 5% and 10% minoxidil.
One study compared a 5% and 2% minoxidil solution on men with androgenic alopecia.
393 participants were examined and tested for over 48 weeks.
157 men were given 5% minoxidil, and 158 were given 2% minoxidil.
78 were given a placebo.
The results showed that 5% was superior to 2% for hair regrowth.
Based on this evidence, it makes sense that 10% could potentially be more effective for hair growth.
If you’re not satisfied with the results from minoxidil alone, you can combine it with other treatments such as low-level laser therapy.
RedRestore’s Laser Cap uses clinically proven wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to support hair growth by improving follicle health, increasing blood flow and combating DHT.
Despite the potential superiority of 10% minoxidil, it may also cause more adverse effects.
Minoxidil is typically well-tolerated but with that being said, a 10% concentration could cause local irritation, pruritis, and hypertrichosis.
These side effects were found to be more common in the 5% minoxidil group compared to the 2% minoxidil group.
This may be one reason why 10% minoxidil is only available with a prescription and isn’t sold under brand names like Rogaine.
To keep things simple, if you’re male, use a 5% minoxidil concentration, and if you’re female, use a 2% concentration.
